MAS is a no-kill shelter, which means no pet will ever be euthanized because it has run out of time to find a home. MAS is committed to ending the overpopulation of pets that results in an estimated 5 million companion pets being euthanized at shelters in the U.S. every year, therefore all cats, rabbits, and dogs adopted from MAS are spayed and neutered prior to adoption. The shelter also sponsors a low-cost spay/neuter clinic for cats once or twice a month, as well as two feral cat clinics each year.

ARF is a first responder animal rescue organization responding to natural and man made disasters and will one day provide a safe haven sanctuary for feral cats and kittens, pit bulls and other misrepresented breeds, factory farm survivors, and special needs companion animals.

The Purple Haze Center is a 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art horse barn that can house up to 16 Thoroughbreds in its 12 x 12 foot stalls. All the stalls have cushy rubber mats on the floor and very quiet sliding stall doors. The stall doors have fold-down fronts that allow the horses to hold their heads outside their stall and look around and interact with barn visitors. Additionally, three 12-foot-long vision slots were crafted between stalls to create a pleasant open-air environment which, along with the spacious 14-foot wide roughened concrete aisle, safely provide horses with what simulates a herd-like environment. With safety bars across the windows in each stall, horses are able to look outside and enjoy the fresh air from outdoors. To alleviate boredom and facilitate retraining, there is a 70 x 72 foot riding arena as well as four 60 x 60 foot paddocks for turnout. The recent addition of two 60 foot round pens allows the horses time on grass. A wash stall, a large utility room, a heated bathroom, and office with soothing lavender painted walls complete the facility. Great attention to detail is given for the comfort and safety of the horses housed at the Purple Haze Center, right down to the purple feed buckets.

Over 400 Thoroughbreds have found new homes and new careers through FLTAP.

There are over 125 active pet therapy teams in the mvPTa. Teams are typically made up of a pet and their owner (dogs, rabbits, cats, and hand-held pets). However, mvPTa does have some escorts that do not have a pet of their own and are certified to work with another person’s pet. mvPTa volunteers visit in facilities throughout the Miami Valley area. Some of these facilities include Miami Valley Hospital, Dayton Children’s Hospital, Community Hospital, Good Samaritan Hospital, and numerous Nursing/Assisted Living facilities, libraries, and schools.

At re-training farms around the country, the TRF prepares racehorses for adoption as riding and companion horses. At eight correctional facilities, inmates build life skills while participating in a vocational training program as they provide supervised care to the TRF’s retired horses.

The Thoroughbred Retirement Foundation is a place that offers a humane alternative to the dire possibilities that have long faced a great majority of ex-racers – neglect, abuse, and slaughter. It is a place, built on love and caring, that is befitting such noble and deserving animals. As a registered 501(c)(3) organization, the TRF receives no public funding and is entirely dependent on the generosity of private individuals.
