The Patricia H. Ladew Foundation (Long Beach, New York 11561) is working to reduce animal suffering one animal at a time by providing housing for homeless cats, sterilizing stray and feral cats to reduce overpopulation, and providing necessary medical treatment for unowned animals.
The house in Oyster Bay is a closed–admission sanctuary for homeless cats that are transfers to the Foundation from overcrowded shelters. It features outdoor enclosed runs and offers a home–like atmosphere where the cats live uncaged (unless illness necessitates temporary caging). Caretakers live on the premises to accommodate daily care for the cats. The Foundation’s staff veterinarian checks each cat on a regular basis and provides any medical treatment necessary. All cats are vaccinated, tested for FELV/FIV, sterilized, and microchipped. New cats are quarantined for 30 days prior to introduction to the resident cats. Entry for new residents is limited and by appointment only.
The Patricia H. Ladew Foundation has recently joined The Mayor’s Alliance of New York City and The Feral Cat Counsel, both of which were formed with the goal of working together with other non–profit rescue groups so that someday, there will be a home for every pet and there will be no more animals euthanized for lack of a home.
